Crash on startup
#1 Submitted: Wed, 31/08/2016 - 19:50

Game just crashes on startup, running an old GTS250 on this machine but it runs Subnautica just fine which also uses DirectX 11. Requested a refund on Steam but trying my luck on here before it goes through, if I can get it to work I'll just cancel the refund.

Game just launches to a black screen and crashes after the splash screen, anyone else had this issue? Direct X and drivers are up to date, did that already.

The game is DX11 only, btw your gpu is too weak to run the game fluently.

As I said in my original post, Subnautica works just fine and uses Direct X 11. A 1 gig GPU is the recommended requirement on the Steam page, it should run it just fine. Don't need to run it in 2100x resolutions, it's just Carmageddon. I can also run Heroes of the Storm just fine in Direct X 11 mode.

The GeForce 200 series are NOT DirectX 11 cards, they do not have hardware features required by the Direct 3D 11 specification and which the game requires. This isn't up for debate, it's a fact about the hardware, NVidia's first DX11 cards were the 400 series, two generations after your card.

Even ignoring the hardware features, the GTS 250 is below the game's minimum requirements, it's got around the same processing power as the Intel GPU in my work laptop, which can just about scrape a playable framerate (tops out around 20 FPS) at 720p with everything turned right down. The game pushes a lot of objects on screen, lots of textures and is heavy on alpha blending among other things so it needs the GPU to do some relatively heavy lifting.

Subnautica, on the other hand does not require DX11 hardware, although it uses the DX11 API it is designed to fall back to the DX10 level pipeline if it runs on DX10 hardware such as your card.

Explain how I'm running Heroes of the Storm in DX11 then? It's also NOT below the minimum requirements as according to the specs on the steam page. Go look. If it's wrong it should be changed.

For the same reason than subnautica, "Subnautica, on the other hand does not require DX11 hardware, although it uses the DX11 API it is designed to fall back to the DX10 level pipeline if it runs on DX10 hardware such as your card"
Heroes of the storm is not a DX11 exclusive title, the minimum spec is windows Xp that never had Dx 11 features.

Carmageddon minimum spec is a 1Gb Dx11 Gpu amd hd6000 or equivalent. Your Gts250 is a DX10 Gpu that can be on par with some Amd HD4000 gpu ... So, sorry Guy, but your Gpu is below the minimum spec.

Not really upset, obviously going to build a new PC at some point. Just thought it was fine with DX11 since both those games run just fine. Thanks for the help, I'll just have to wait to play is all. Have a good day guys
