Have gamers forgot about having fun?
#1 Submitted: Sat, 06/06/2015 - 01:31

so, as the topic says,
Have gamers forgot about having fun?

I really mean this, Every community I become a member of goes like this.

Stage 1: Game is anounced, people are happy,
Stage 2: game is in development , some people are happy, while others Demand fetures to be added
Stage 3: Game nears compleation, People are happy while others start whining about how the 'devs dont care'.. I dont care who the devs are, or what kinda game it is, But this allways seems to happen, even if everything is running smoothly.
Stage 4: Game is released, community devides into fans, and total haters, Fans over protect game saying it has no flaws at all, haters claim everything to be a flaw, both sides lie, flame wars start.

and then it goes on,
So why does gaming bring out so much fighting talk amung people anyways? And everyones obsessions, FPS, Graphics, Fetrues that are irelivent but THEY see as important, It allmost seems like gameplay is now.... secondary?
I rember way back when games were just a simple fun,

Now people are getting mad at game development, getting mad at game releases, or if they like the game, they go online and get mad at other people who are playing. and this kinda worries me,

When did games turn from a source of entertainment to being a source of stress?
Personally I just play stuff I like, for 'Fun' remember fun? fun was great,

So let me know below, Do you just play games for your own enjoyment, Or must they be a masterpice of engineering to even entertain you? and if so you can you (without getting mad) explain why?

Im genuinly curius at why gamers now seem to be such a negative bunch of angry people? Or am I totally overthinking all of this and its just a very vocal minoirty? afterall if 1 out of 10 people yell, youll her that yeller, so yeah,
What kinda gamer do you see yourself as, and do you think theres anything wrong with the current state of gaming? if not should I just shut up and ignore angry teens? :P

allrighty im gona go enjoy some nice Relaxing type gaming, relaxing as in, creation games.. I love creation games.

I couldn't agree more... That's one reason why I do not play multiplayer...

"My connections lagging; It must be the game programmer's fault, therefore I am entitled to a patch immediately! I'm going to hang around though; just to bi*ch some more. WAH! WAH!"

My thoughts are simply: Entitlement is not sexy.

Another nice one: "I paid a dollar for this; and it isn't exactly like *Whatever the hot game is currently*! I ignored the ratings, but it's their fault!!"

God; I could keep ranting all day.

I'm a wannabe modder; looking to improve!

there have always been gamers with terrible opinions, they just have an internet to tell us about it now.

The popularity of the internet is a double edged sword, on one hand, there are lots of cool folks and neat art to see, but on the other hand, there's loads of negative people and party poopers. Just enjoy yourself and dont pay too much attention to peeps who want to ruin your day because you like a video game that they dont like.

Couldn't say any better. My thoughts exactly.

No argument to what has already been said. It seems increasingly common that those whom are unhappy with the way games pan out make it their life-long mission to destroy it for everyone else who enjoy the games for what they are.

I don't get why some people aggressively post, and then repost their opinion, attacking anyone who has a different point of view like a broken record looping over and over again. If you don't like the game, then don't play it.

I think the vast commercialisation of the games industry has led many gamers to believe a game MUST have over 300 million US dollar budget and a licensed game engine. It MUST have a control system identical to another title. Many gamers (often younger players) rely on the in-game control hints, rather than learning a new game's idiosyncracies. The certainly don't remember when sometimes you were forced to READ the FUCKING MANUAL! The increasing use of Steam as a delivery system has exacerbated the issue. I'm sure a lot of hate has been whipped up over certain features clearly mentioned in the PDF manual steam tab.

Carma is exactly what the original fans wanted. It shares all the quirks of it's predecessors. The hilarious unpredictable glitches, the "physics freakouts" which set out to almost break the game (because it wants to), the patchy performance on machines not up to the task. It does NOT hold your hand and caress your brow, like a lot of AAA titles.

Stainless perhaps misjudged how homogenised and derivative gaming has become. They got a lot of hate for it, but I just hope the game is doing well with a QUIET percentage of players actually PLAYING the game. Frankly I fucking love it. It was why I got into PC games in the first place.

It's the same with movies and tv shows... check out the boards on IMDB :P

Recently there's been discussion about Constantine getting cancelled and a few people have been celebrating the cancellation as if it's the greatest thing to have ever happened in the history of the universe :/
If they don't like it don't watch it, and don't feel the need to go on boards and try to convince everybody else to hate it (or insult them if they do like it)

I know that's not exactly on topic but I think the same thing applies to games...

*oh shit, I've done a serious post!!! I must go and lie down*

Dident know it was the same with movies?

I Guess yall are right tho, When I was a kid I guess it was not super common to have the internet, so we only talked about games with our freinds? so fatcats right there.

Im just kinda dissopoined how the quest for perfection overtakes everything else, it feels like peopel worry more aobut a game being perfect graphically and proformance wise, and forget to have fun, thats all I was really trying to say,

but its not just indie games, GTAV release saw an explosion of pissed off forum posted invade GTAForums and such places, shitposting everywhere, mostly to provoke other people. I guess Im just kinda sad that everyones so angry and agressive and forgot that the whole point of video games is for entertainment,

but yeah, People 'I dont like this, My opinion is correct, Other people should not like this, I will force them not to'

It might be part of a person's growth. I've noticed it happening to me, too. I used to adore any little thing in games. Then recently, for the past few years, I've just started hating on small problems in games. I don't know, it might be because anger is a much more powerful emotion than happiness. But I'm working on efforts to improve that, and I think I'm doing a good job at it. More recent games that come out are flawed, have some obvious stupid things. But in an attempt to relax and look at things in a better lens, I can say that in the end, most games are still fun. The backlash for the negatives is still important so that games may continue to improve, but it shouldn't be a deciding factor.
If I'm correct, and this "I hate video games" thing is a part of life, then I suppose that in a few years from now, the children that are currently crying over games like C:R will eventually look at it with a more peaceful mind, and realize that the game pleased a community greatly, and was actually quite fun. I say we give time its time, and for now, let the really pissy complainers have their bottle.

Oh, don't say that! I have it yet to come. I don't want to turn Garg.

It is not limited to games or movies, look any forum, there is hate and flamear, shitposting and provoking. Look infant forums, mothers fighting about something like breastfeeding and calling others bad mother if they don't breastfeed.

Maybe it is just that internet is not good for peoples. Only nice forums are those ''inbred'' forums, like CWA board.

@Maxine. I will tell you why it all goes like this these days.

First, the number of yearly new games / sequels that are being released has increased 1000 times compared to the number of games that used to be released up until about 2005 when stuff was till going acceptably smooth in the industry.
The budgets for triple A games have also increased 10 fold since 2005 and those studios that have been able to make good use of hundreds of millions of bucks worth of development, have been able to put out some games that have spoiled the entire industry with their graphics, gameplay and overall experience.
Another problem that is causing the gamers to react like they do these days, is the huge internet social interaction evolution that has taken place in the last 10 years.
People now more than ever, feel entitled to review and decide for themselves what is good and what is bad in a game, even before it comes out.
It is not even related to games only, it's related to the whole software industry as a whole.
People now much more than 15 years ago, are getting involved in development either with pro knowledge or with suggestions and rage when their suggestions do not get heard or reflected in the final product.

Youtube, Twitter and Facebook and later Reddit + many others all combined, have single-handedly enabled the whole world to inform themselves when something sucks or is about to suck soon.
Back when Windows Xp came out, the world was so much different than it's now.
That's when Microsoft for example, could spoon feed many of us their bullshit and it always felt that Microsoft is an invisible corporation somewhere up the corporate pyramid and what they produced was pro stuff of the highest level.
Then youtube came out and by the time Vista came out, the youtube community single handedly put down vista for all of it's flaws turning it into a global awareness event.

So to sum it up.
There are too many games coming out these days and the market is hyper-oversaturated to the point where there are hundreds of games released just this year that many of us haven't even heard of and will never hear about ever due to lack of funding for proper marketing.
The ideas for games have gotten repetitive since quite a while now and creativity and unique design is rarely found these days and when it's found it's usually in low budget indie games.
To make a great game that doesn't really bring something new to the table, these days you need a shitload of money and a shitload of manpower.
Accidents can happen when none of the rules above are needed for a great game but such accidents are very rare.

Another factor is that humanity has become more knowledgeable of how games work, so they start demanding features and see bugs when bugs exist.
Back in the day, most people didn't even know what resolution is.
Back when games used to be pixelated people didn't even notice the pixels because they didn't know what pixels are nor what resolution is.
Also, back in the day, if you didn't buy gaming magazines, you simply didn't even know about most games until after they came out and you tried them for the first time, not knowing anything about them.

Carmageddon just happens to be a game that I found on a friend's pc back in the day and when I played it for the first time, I knew nothing about it.
I played carmageddon for years after it came out, without knowing NOR CARING who developed it, why or how.
I just took carmageddon for granted that it was a game and that it was fun and for all I cared, the government could have made it or santa claus.
You would not see game trailers or screenshots beforehand back in the day.

So this is why people are acting like THIS towards most of the new games.

But you are wrong if you claimed that this is happening in the case of EVERY SINGLE new game.
There are new games out there that are doing fine on their forums from start to finish.
The main thing is that the game is good looking, interesting and well optimized and that guarantees much more fans than haters.
The problem is that with each passing year, to actually nail all 3 of these requirements, is getting harder and harder.

These are the last moments of serious gaming that were are all living here.
Konami and Nintendo are not going casual android games for nothing, they are the first to know that triple A gaming is dead.
Ubisoft is also planning to drop triple A games in the near future.
That is also why Valve made steps towards reshaping the gaming industry in the mods department and start a trend in modding sales and revenue percentage for Valve.
Mods and indies are the future of real gaming and this is in fact very normal, because that's how gaming used to be made before the industry took it over.
Gaming used to be all about indie back in the 90's and 80's

Gaming will live through indies and the corporate side of gaming will live through mobile shit and free to play shit.
