#1 Submitted: Wed, 01/06/2011 - 16:54

anyone here happen to know how to get Carmageddon 1 running on W7 x64?

keep getting the dreaded "check if the program is x86 or x64 or contact the supplier" message.

any fix/workaround would be appreciated

Recommend the above - but the following also works:-

Create a .bat file in the root of your Carma directory copy & paste the following:-

Quote:
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
Start /w CARMA95.exe -hires
pause
start explorer.exe

Save
Double click on the newly create .bat file

Again i recommend the above method though as you'll appreciate the nicer resolution

God, this is making me want to play now. Anyone tried multiplayer over Hamachi or maybe Kali?

Multiplayer is great fun over Hamachi, it gets unsyncronised a lot if you don't have an insanely fast internet connection.

We did try a lot. It is difficult to get Carmageddon 1 to work over the Internet but LAN gaming is ok.
Carmageddon 2 has got a tool that patches IPX into UDP and makes it easier to play online games but there are syncing issues atm.

... and carmageddon add-ons at road reaction.

Carmageddon 1 (W7 x64 on 1680x1050)

It works perfectly!! ;)
Enjoy.

What you will need:

Some dosbox build with glide support, I suggest to use Taewoong’s build from his site (I am using version from 2011-01-25)
nglide glide wrapper or real 3dfx voodoo card (other glide wrappers WON’T work)
original cd images of Carmageddon since 3dfx version always check for cd, you can use dos version of Carmageddon or Carmageddon from Max Pack compilation (with Splat Pack)

How to make it work:

install nglide, run configurator from Start menu -> All programs -> nGlide and set resolution to native resolution of your monitor. You can also enable vertical sync for better quality.
Extract downloaded dosbox to some folder and open dosbox.conf in notepad (or other simple text editor).
Here you need to make few changes to make carmageddon run at full details. First you need to find line with “memsize=16″ in [dosbox] section and change it to “memsize=63″. Then find [glide] section (near the end) and make sure that glide is set to true (should be that way by default). And last is the [autoexec] section where you need to put these two lines

mount C interplay
imgmount D C:\carmageddon\carmageddon.cue -t iso

where in the second line you put path to your Carmageddon image, I have images in cue/bin format but it should also work with iso images.
Save and close dosbox.conf, create new folder with name “interplay” in the dosbox folder and delete glide2x.dll so dosbox will use nglide.
Now you can run dosbox and install Carmageddon by running dosinst.bat from d:\(inside dosbox). Install to default folder, select full installation and in the sound setup at the end select autodetection. If you installed Max Pack version you can directly run 3dfx version by running 3dfx.exe from c:\games\carma, otherwise you need to install 3dfx patch, (701.93 kB) and then run voodo2c.exe from c:\games\carma

You can install Splat Pack using similar procedure. To make it look even better you can enable Anti-aliasing from your graphic card control panel.

To make it run automatically you can add these lines to [autoexec] section in dosbox.conf

c:

cd games

cd carma

3dfx.exe

One last warning, running Carmageddon in dosbox is really cpu intensive, so you need at least 2.4GHz Core 2 processor to get some decent fps, or you can try lowering in-game details.

Got it working also, dosbox method.
Took an evening of googling but its sorted.
Anyone who wants to do this aswell, if you have serious performance issues (system specs of c1 in doxbox are nowhere near what it origionally required...you need recent dualcore machine to get away with running it smoothly) you might want to try the second suggestion as that more or less will run it natively on Windows requiring substantially less power.

3dFx patch?

I myself downlo... made an iso from my origional c1 cd ^^. (its broken, give me a break ok? :( )
Then i just mounted that in a virtual drive (Daemon Tools). (same as having cd in drive)

Then i installed Taewoong’s build from DoxBox with the nglide wrapper. Did the steps where you edit dosbox.conf, then i went on starting DosBox. Mounted a random ass dir as c:, mounted virutal drive with iso image (if you have working cd, this would be your cd drive) as a virtual drive in dosbox and from that i installed carmageddon to the random ass dir, configured sound and gore password, and ran 3dFX. I patched nothing.

I can write a step my step instruction if needed but i think its similiar to previous instructional.

Great info by oNeiRoS.
Only problem for me was after I applied the 3dfx patch and tried to run voodo2c.exe I got an error that said it was unable to load DLL...

Then I ran it using Glidos... seems to work OK only it looks like this: sometimes my car is invisible, random text on screen and no sound :( Anybody any ideas? Running on Win7 32bit

EDIT: Fixed. retarded moment by me
