They said on steam that they wouldn't launch it for WP8 because they want to focus on the main game and low user base compared to Android and IOS

I managed to get the Android version of this game running on a Lumia 920 using the W10 technical insider preview's leaked Project Astoria!

That was the good news...

  • Framerate is terrible, I'd say 5-10fps (as expected, Microsoft is still testing Astoria so all the debug flags are turned on)
  • It seems to crash when the player car hits an opponent car after a certain amount of time (memory leak?).
  • Tilt controls are oriented incorrectly, if you hold the phone normally it thinks you've rotated it 90°
  • Video's don't show anything, just the audio...

That was the bad news I could find...

I think project Astoria has a serious potential to make it cheap and easy for Stainless to port the game to Windows, as most of the issues I found can probably be fixed!

PS: I am running a slightly older version, 326, as the newest version has some permission denied error when I'm trying to install it.
PPS: I technically got the game from unspoken sources, but I have a legal full version on my iOS device...

Isn't there anything we could do with some kind of dosbox/vm for WP8 to at least load the old dos C1 properly?

... and carmageddon add-ons at road reaction.

I tried to find a WP version of DOSBox, there's one but the website seems to be down.
Then I tried an Android version of DOSBox, black screen.

Then I thought about doing it myself, quickly got the following issues with the idea though:

  • No 3DFX
  • Pretty slow hardware

The 3DFX issue is probably very difficult, if not impossible, to fix in a considerable amount of time. Software mode probably would work.
The slow hardware can't be fixed, I tried the DOSBox version of Carma1 on my laptop - it runs at about 2 fps... That's a 2.7GHz dualcore, phones don't go that high :(

Technically possible, as WP8+ supports C++, but practically impossible.

I uploaded some videos of the game running on Windows Phone Mobile:

Oh I never considered the 3DFX mode to be an option. Software C1 is the real deal in my eyes.
I guess 320x200 low res mode should work decently in DOSBox, 640x480 should as well.
Too bad there's really no DOSBox or alternative available for Windows Phone D: What is that one you're talking about?

Looks like the android port is working decently on your phone!

I was referencing to the WP version of DOSBox that's actually referenced on DOSBox's website: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Releases (at the bottom) I'm pretty sure you could get a PPC app running on WP/WM.

I just tested the DOSBox on my laptop, and it's actually running really smooth, so phone performance might not be as bad as I thought!

The Android port is working decently, except for the crashes!

I wonder how difficult it'd be to port DOSBox over... without 3DFX!
